EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE ON HEALTH ECONOMICS IN PROSTHETICS AND ORTHOTICS

There is a scarcity of literature exploring Health Economics in Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O). The P&O sector has, over the past decades, moved to Bachelor’s or Masters Degree level as requirement for entry practice and, with that, there has been growing body research knowledge generation focusing primarily on clinical aspects engineering advances. No corresponding emerged economic P&O, creating fundamental weakness both technical efforts advance this field within an economically sustainable framework. This will become critical data driven advances (e.g. exoskeletons, mass customizable prostheses) improvements osseointegration, diabetes treatments) make reimbursement devices ever more complex challenging. tension between what possible fundable increase unless also drives down costs. Finding right balance be challenge, already struggles justify current standards care. Special Edition takes snapshot stakeholder perspectives opinions topic organized around following groups: End-user, Researcher (Engineering Clinical), Prosthetic Orthotic Practitioner importance, four papers describing interdisciplinary project Osseointegration that was led by payor.
